Lionsgate.

Lionsgate.
Lionsgate is a Canadian entertainment company. It was formed in Vancouver, but is headquartered in Santa Monica, California. The main popular films that Lionsgate have done are: The Hunger Games, American Psycho, Kick-Ass and The Cabin In The Woods.
Some popular Horror films that Lionsgate have made are:

The Cabin In                                              Hostel.                                          The Last Exorcism.                          My Bloody Valentine.
                 The Woods.

All of the horror films above are their only successful horrors in the last couple years. After researching horror films from Lionsgate, I discovered that horror was not their strongest points when making films.
by finding this out i don't think i will use this as a institution for the beginning of the 2 minutes.

Warner Bros.

Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Entertainment, Inc., also known as Warner Bros. Pictures or simply Warner Bros. (though the name was occasionally given in full form as Warner Brothers during the company's early years), is an American producer of film, television, and music entertainment.
Some of the most popular films created by Warner Bros Fox are: Harry Potter, Valentine’s Day,Sex and the City, The Hangover,The Dark Knight and Slumdog Millionaire
As well as action/adventure/comedy films, Warner Brothers also do horror films, some of their popular ones are:

Friday The 13th.                                          Orphan.                                           House Of Wax.                                 Sweeney Todd.

This Institution would be good to use at the begging of my opening 2 minutes, but seeing as this institution has a wide range of action films to adventure films and that is what they mostly focus on, i dont think i will be using this institution seeing as they usually stray away from the horror genre and keep their mind on the other genres.

Twisted Pictures

Twisted Pictures.
Twisted Pictures is an American independent production company Located in Los Angeles, mainly creating films of the horror genre.
They are known for producing the Saw Film series.here are some of the films that they have created:

Repo!                                               Dead Silence                                          The tortured.                                       Saw,II,III,IV,V,VI
              The Genetic Opera.

This institution would be great to use in our opening 2 minutes, this is because their main focus is on horror films, and our chosen genre is horror, so i am certain that this institution will go well with our opening 2 minutes.

20th century fox

20th century fox.

Located in Los Angele's, 20th century fox is a film company that has created many popular movies.
The organisation was founded in 1935 hand has become the most recognised film institution in the world.
20th century fox has created numerous films such as; X-men, Percy Jackson & the Olympians and Avatar.
although 20th century fox create fantasy and adventure films, they also create Horror films,
Abraham Lincon:                                                            Jeepers creepers.                                        Jennifer's Body.
                                                               Vampire Hunter

When it comes to Horror films, 20 th Century Fox prefers to distribute them rather than produce them. And because 20th century fox also do horror films, this production company would be a good one to consider to use to put at the beginning of our 2 minutes.

Mood board.

  1. We are using Hannah's house to film, because it is the right fitting and scene to our chosen genre because it has small places to hide and has a horror-feel.
  2. The people we are using to act in our film will be ourselves and/or other people that are teenagers.
  3. we will be making the actors hide in small places and look scared.
  4. we will have a murderer on the loose in Hannah's house.
  5. the killer will be using a knife to kill the victims.
  6. we will involve shadows/ people lurking in the shadows
  7. these stairs are similar to the ones in Hannah's house, where the victims will be running up.
  8. Hannah has a cupboard under her stairs, a dead victim will be in there.
  9. the killer will kill the teenagers with a knife.
  10. this wardrobe is similar to the one in Hannah's house, where some of the teenagers will be hiding in.
  11. the teenagers will be wearing pj's or casual clothes, seeing as they are at a sleepover/gathering.
  12. the killer will be wearing a horrifying mask that will scare the victims so that it will be the last thing that they ever see.
  13. we will be using fake blood to give the effect of wounds and cuts to make it more horrifying and to scare the audience.

Audience profiling.

Audience profiling.

Comparable Profile for Scream 3.
(slasher horror)
By the look of this profile the age that mostly views slasher horrors are 15-24 year olds, therefore the main target audience we should focous on is the mid-teens and early 20's( 15-24). It also shows that the main Gender that views these kind of films are Male. this means we should make our film more appealing to men (This could explain why nearly every slasher horror movie has a range of attractive young women to appeal to the greater male audience), but still appeal to women seeing as 39% of them watch slasher horrors.
The main Class that view these kind of movies are the middle/working class,  this could be because the theme of horror slasher could not appeal to the higher class seeing as it involves gore and death, and it appeals to the middle/ working class because it could be some sort of an escape for them.

Comparable Profile for Final Destination.
(Supernatural horror)
This profile shows the age that mostly watch supernatural horrors are 15-24 year olds, this means that the main focus and target audience is mid teens and early 20's.  The main gender that seem to watch supernatural horrors are Male, again, this means that most horror films appeal to men, this is why our opening 2 minutes/ film should appeal mostly to men. (including attractive females in distress and gore.) but we still need to make the film appeal to women seeing as 47% of females do actually watch supernatural horrors.
Supernatual horrors attract the more higher class, looking at the comparable profile shows this, this could mean that the higher class like to see not much gore but alot of freaky and weird stuff relation to supernatural things. the lower working class seem to not watch alot of supernatural horrors, this could be because there are many final destination films and they may not always be able to afford to see every single one of these supernatural horror films.

Preliminary Task: Evaluation.

In class we showed our preliminary task.
After it was shown we had some good feedback and hardly any negative comments.
This is what was said:
    • The camera work was steady, and it was well filmed.
    • The editing and sound were effective, and it flowed very well.
    • We used over the shoulder shots, and extreme close-ups effectively.
    • We stuck to the 180 degree rule.
    • Our shot reverse shot and match on action were effective.
    • Wide range of camera angles.
In my opinion we did a good job with our preliminary task, but i couldnt help think that we should have had more dialouge to make it more interesting.
Hannah and Jasmine did a very good job with the camera and camera shots and keeping it steady.
The use of editing with Imovie was effective and the way we stuck to the 180 degree rule was effective.
I think my group did very well, and incorpritated everything we learnt in the first term of our media class effectively.

Research and planning

- Analysis of at least 4 different genre openings (analyse how mise-en-scene, sound, plot convey genre to audience)
- Preliminary task diary
- Preliminary task evaluation
- own ideas mind map - what genre? plot? etc
- Analysis of at least 2 openings of films from your chosen genre

Preliminary Task: Editing.

For our editing in our preliminary task we used Imovie
.
we used imovie because we did our editing at one of our houses, and we used an apple mac.
For the editing we put all the clips that we wanted together and fixed them to one another so that the clip ran smoothly.

we used a clip twice in editing, we cropped it and slowed the motion down so that it effectively create tension between the two characters. (and to also fill up more time)

We also used a transition edit near the end to create a time-lapse to show that time has passed by, also in addition to this we changed the colour to a dark dusky effect to show that time has passed.

Preliminary task: Camera Angles.

In my preliminary task we used a range of camera angles ranging from low angle shots to over the shoulder shots.
this is how we are going to have our camera angles/shots and how its going to plan out.

    • Close up shot of my hand opening the door.
    • low angle shot from the floor when i come through the door.
    • close up of door closing.
    • over the shoulder shot while i sit down at the table from Georges perspective.
    • medium shot of George closing book and folding arms
    • long shot of me and George putting hands on table
    • close up on my face of me saying 'so'
    • close up of George of him saying 'so'
    • High angle shot of us pulling faces/birds eye view shot.
    • close up of my eyes/face.
    • close up of George's eyes/face
    • extreme close up of my eyes
    • extreme close up of George's eyes
    • medium shot of George saying 'im just gonna go'
    • medium shot of George getting up from his chair and walking out the door
    • medium close up of me hitting my head on the table
    • and numerous close ups of me hitting my head on the table.
    • medium shot of my head on the table
    • zoom out to long shot of me and medium shot of George walking in and getting his book
    • extreme/close up of George grabbing the book and saying 'i forgot my book'
    • long shot of me still at the table.
As you can see we used many shot types as much as we can. we shot some other scenes from different angles and places, to see how they work out. but we choose the most effective ones and used them, except for the head banging on the table part, we used numerous shots and used all of them in our task for that extra laugh.

Preliminary task: What we did.

For the preliminary task we had to do a short clip that has to consist of little dialogue and a range of camera shots, for example; over the shoulder shot, low angle shot, high angle shot etc.

In my group we decided to have two people having a conversation at a table.
Before we could start filming we had allot of dilemmas, some of us were ill every-time we wanted to film.
so in result of this we had to our filming at the last minute on a weekend at someones house.

Our preliminary task will play out like this;-

    • I will walk through the door.
    • I will close the door.
    • I will sit down at the table.
    • George will look at me, close his book and fold his arms.
    • We both then put our hands on the table in sync.
    • I will then say 'So'.
    • George will then say 'So'.
    • We then pull 'awkward' faces while looking away from each-other.
    • We then will have a close up of my face with my eyes squinting.
    • And then we will have a close up of Georges face with his eyes blinking.
    • Then again we will have a close up of my eyes squinting.
    • And a close up of Georges eyes blinking.
    • We then will have George saying 'Im just gonna go' in a whispered tone while getting up from his chair.
    • George will then leave the room.
    • I will then have several shots of me hitting my head hard against the table.
    • We will then have a transition/ fade to black and then show me with my head still on the table.
    • George will then come back in, say 'i forgot my book' take his book, and then leave.
While filming we had made mistakes, so we had to film some things over because we either laughed, or did the wrong thing.
A few times we shot the same things over but in different angles and diffrent camera shots because we wanted to shoot from every possible angle to see what clip was more effective.
Overall it took my group around 1 and a half hours to film our preliminary task, (excluding editing which would've been about 20 minutes)

Preliminary Task

Lord of the rings Opening analysis -Adventure

Sci-fi Opening Analysis

Romance (10 things i hate about you opening 2 minutes analysis)

10 things i hate about you opening 2 minutes analysis.

Action film analysis.
Underworld. (2003)

The film underworld awkaening is about avampire woman who leads a battle with lycans (warewolves)againt mankind.
Firstly we see that the genre is conveyed through Mise-en-scene. the surroundings and lighting are dark, gloomy and uncomfortable creating emphasis on the danger that is occurring. The place is Set in a tall concrete building with big rooftops and lots of windows.
Mise-en-scene is shown through the costumes and props, the main character is wearing a skin tight catsuit that seems to be flexible to her movement, this effectively shows that it is an action film by doing this because it indicated that she moves around alot.
The men that are after her are wearing protective gear, effectively showing that they will be in danger some-point in the movie, additionally these men have guns and warfare which immediately infers that this film's genre is action. The use of props is effectively showing what kind of genre this film is, For example; We see fake blood being used creating the effect of danger which is often used in action films to make it more thrilling and scary. In the background we see fire by using this prop it creates a sense of danger that most action films have.
Secondly, This is an action film with alot of cliche's in, the location is gloomy, the place is surrounded by guards and officers that carry guns and weaponry. The heroine is another cliche of action films, she is flexible, fast moving and seems to have combattraining seeing as she can backflip of buildings (well, she is a vampire, which means that she has special super powers, which is another cliché in most action-sci-fi films.)
The beggining shows a medium shot of the woman surrounded by lights and gunfire, she is shown from the waist up, showing that she is the main character that we should be focussing on.

The Ring opening review

The first 2 minutes of the horror film The Ring already shows a number of  horror movie cliches, the beginning is creepy and Erie which is used in most horror films, the first main one would be the two teenage girls home alone in a big house joking about the 'tape' that is supposedly kills you, the portrayal of these girls gives a sense of them being the popular stuck up school girls that the audience tends to resent and often want them to die. The second one would be the dark haired girl trying to scare the other girl by telling her whats in the tape and that after someone watches the tape they get a phone call saying they are going to die in seven days

The third would be that the other girl starts to tell the dark haired girl that shes seen the tape and got a phone call and starts to freak out, she then pulls a prank on her friend by pretending to be choking and then starts to laugh, this type of scene can be seen in many other horror films because first they joke about dying and then later on in the film, they always end up dying a horrible death.

Another would be that the girls are childish which means that because they are acting this way they are more likely to be curious and naive. The brown haired girl jokes and acts childish by saying that 'you fell for it' making the audience feel that the other girl is gullible and will believe in anything.
